Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese healing technique that
involves stimulating specific points in the body by inserting extremely thin
needles. The Chinese believe that the needles help restore the smooth flow
of qi, or energy, through the body. Any blockage or imbalance in
qi, they believe, can result in pain and even illness. Thus, in Chinese
philosophy, the application of acupuncture extends beyond pain relief to the
treatment of many other ailments. There are even seasonal "balancing"
therapies to avoid colds and the flu. What´s Chi or Qi? Chi
(pronounced chee) or qi is the vital energy life force the Chinese believe
to be the basis of all life. Chi circulates through the body through 14
major energetic pathways called meridians. Most of these meridians connect
to one major internal organ, with the power then enabling the organ to
function correctly. We cannot see meridians with our eyes but modern science
has shown their existence through the use of electronic measures.
Acupuncture treatments make use of these meridians. |

Forms of Treatments may
include one or all of the following |
- Acupuncture - Acupuncture is the treatment of pain or disease by
inserting the tips of needles at specific points on the skin
|
- Acupressure - Acupressure is an ancient natural therapy derived from
acupuncture, however instead of using needles (as with acupuncture),
acupressure uses the hands and feet to stimulate pressure points. These
pressure points are located all over the body and are the same as those
used with acupuncture.
|
- Cupping When applied to the surface of the skin the underlying
soft-tissue is drawn into the cup. The cups may be moved to provide a form
of massage. Cupping is unique in its ability to provide a negative
pressure to the soft-tissue.
|
- Moxibustion is a form of heat therapy where an herb, usually
artemesia vulgaris, is burned and used to indirectly heat specific
acupuncture points or regions of the body. Many acupuncturists
employ the use of moxibustion to enhance the effects of an acupuncture
treatment. Moxibustion is the application of heat to specific points of
the body to treat diseases and restore the smooth flow of energy (chi)
throughout the meridian system in the body. Rest assured, the body
itself is NEVER burned. Some conditions that respond well to
moxibustion include stiff neck, weak back, frozen shoulder and fatigue.
- Herbal medicine - Chinese herbs may be given in the form of
teas, pills, and capsules to supplement acupuncture treatment.
- Electrostimulation - provides electrical stimulation to two to
four acupuncture needles. Can be used for pain relief and muscle pain.
